Too much Iron-Man…

This post is from way back in August 2015, I never got around to posting it but I am gonna try do this now…

Attempting to write a blog is going to be fun, not really a man for words or reading but I’ll give it a go. The reason being… A couple of weeks back I was diagnosed with a condition called haemochromatosis. Basically, I have too much Iron in my blood that’s been built up over time since the day I was born. It all started back in June when I just stated to feel unwell, after some routine tests at the doctors it was discovered that the Ferritin(the clue is in the name) levels in my blood were extremely high, which most likely means I have whats called as the Celtic Curse or Iron Overload. Its a genetic disorder that is rumored to have evolved from the time of the Irish Famine when our ancestors were starving and our genes mutated in order to absorb essential nutrients like Iron that were scarcely available so that we wouldn’t die. The problem is though, that some people now absorb too much of the Iron and it gets deposited on our Organs and Joints which will eventually lead to issues like Cirrhosis, Diabetes, Arthritis and Brown Breadness…

The Good News is that its very treatable, my Ferritin level in Micro-grams currently stands at 1450 per unit of blood, the average persons is around 100-200mcg so I am at least 7 times the healthy amount. So what do the wizards in Vincents Hospital need to do? Every 2 weeks they are gonna sting me for a pint of blood, the result being that when the new blood plasma gets made to replace the pint, it draws the Iron from your Organs to make the new Red Blood that has been taken out hence decreasing the overall Ferritin level in your blood. Its that simple!
